Widely used as an element additive in the smelting of vanadium containing alloy steel and alloy cast iron, as well as in the manufacturing of permanent magnets. The vanadium iron produced in China includes varieties such as V401 and V402, which contain about 40% vanadium.
Vanadium iron is supplied in block or powder form. The maximum weight of block vanadium iron shall not exceed 8kg, and the number of fragments smaller than 20 × 20mm shall not exceed 5% of the total weight. Powdered ferrovanadium shall be supplied with -0.45mm mesh, of which -0.098mm shall not exceed 30% of the total weight. The surface and cross-section of the vanadium iron block, as well as the vanadium powder, do not contain obvious inclusions visible to the naked eye.

(1) Distinguished by reducing agent: According to the different reducing agents used in smelting ferrovanadium, it is usually divided into three types: carbothermal method, silothermal method or thermite method.
(2) Distinguished by reduction equipment: There are electric furnace methods (including carbothermal method, electrosilicothermal method and electric thermite method) smelted in electric furnaces. The method that does not use an electric furnace for heating and relies only on its own reaction heat is called the thermite method (i.e., the outside-furnace method).
(3) Differentiate according to the different vanadium-containing raw materials: the method of smelting vanadium pentoxide and vanadium trioxide raw materials and the method of directly smelting ferrovanadium with vanadium slag.
